Saudi Arabia continues to exceed all expectations at London 2012

Final day of the Individual Competition – London 2012

Riders from Saudi Arabia today continued their superb performances from the team competition and came tantalisingly close to securing an individual bronze.

Three of the Saudi Equestrian team qualified for the individual competition on the final day of Jumping at Greenwich Park – HRH Prince Abdullah Al Saud on Davos, Kamal Bahamdan on Noblesse des Tess and Ramzy Al Duhami on Bayard van de Villa Theresia. The structure of the Olympic competition meant that all three started the day on 0 faults.

37 riders went in the first round, and with all three Saudi Equestrian riders performing so well in the Team Competition, the first to go into the arena was Kamal Bahamdan.

In the form of his life, Kamal went clear but was just over the time limit so incurred a single time fault. Speaking about his beloved mare Tess, Kamal said, “I cannot say enough about my mare, she surprises me every time. She loves the atmosphere and grows a foot taller every time she gets into the arena”.

Next into the ring was Ramzy Al Duhami, who had performed so well during the team competition. Bayard was feeling the side effects of such intensive competition over the previous four days, and brought down three fences for a total of 12 faults. “My horse was exhausted,” said Ramzy, “He has done four rounds of jumping so it was difficult for him but I am so happy he gave us his best, and we are delighted with that important team medal.”

HRH Prince Abdullah was the final rider from the Saudi Equestrian team to jump. After three rounds of almost faultless jumping over the preceding days, this may have been one round too far and two poles went down which, when added to a time fault, gave the combination a total of nine points. “I was really pleased with my horse and was not expecting two down, but this is the sport and we are all delighted to have created history by having three riders in the final for the first time”.

After the first round Kamal, with only one time fault against his name, made it through to the second round. Jumping in 16th place, he knew that only a clear round would put him in contention and, to the delight of the Saudi supporters amongst the 23,000 crowd, that’s exactly what he did. However in doing so he incurred a time fault of one point, which dropped him down into fourth place.

The final word on the team’s performance comes from Kamal Bahamdan, “The Jumping competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games will go down in history for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Only three years since it was created, Saudi Equestrian has won Olympic Team Bronze and came tantalisingly close to an individual medal too.”

He continued, “We thank Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud and the entire Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its support during The Games, and hope that our success in 2012 will act as the catalyst for the sport of Show Jumping to grow in popularity over the coming years.”
