GOLD AND SILVER FOR SAUDI EQUESTRIAN

There were huge celebratory scenes in Incheon, South Korea yesterday, as Abdullah Al Sharbatly clinched the individual gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games, to add to the team silver medal that Saudi Equestrian won two days ago.

Riding his superstar 11-year-old stallion, Callahan, Abdullah was the only competitor to go clear throughout all the final individual rounds which came down to an intense final jump-off between himself and Japan’s Satoshi Hirao. However, having jumped first, Abdullah recorded a lightning quick time which piled the pressure on the Japanese rider – resulting in him picking up four penalties and leaving Abdullah to take the gold medal.

HH Prince Faisal Alshalan and 13-year-old stallion Talan were unlucky not to take a position on the podium. Talan had one pole down in the second round and went into a jump-off for the bronze medal along with eight other competitors – an unusual scenario for top level competition – but despite being foot perfect in the jump off, he was just outside the bronze medal winning time by 2.09 seconds and had to settle for a respectable fifth place.

Abdullah’s victory followed Saudi Equestrian winning team silver two days earlier at the Dream Park Equestrian Venue – it was the team’s biggest success so far this year. Joining Abdullah and Prince Faisal in the team were new Saudi team members, Abdulrahman Al Rajhi, 19 riding New Orleans and Salman Al Maqadi, 21, riding Senorita, who were both representing their country in a major competition for the firts time.

Saudi Equestrian Chef d’Equipe, Rogier van Iersel said: “To get team silver and individual gold at the Asian Games is an excellent achievement for Saudi Equestrian, not just for the riders but all those involved in the team.”

“Abdullah put up a terrific performance in the individual competition and Faisal was very unlucky not to get a medal. Our young members, Salman and Abdulrahman, made an excellent debut in their first major competition to help their country win the silver medal.”
