Saudi Equestrian Team heads to the Asian Games

Saudi Equestrian will be represented at the Asian Games this weekend by HH Prince Faisal Alshalan, Abdullah Al Sharbatly and new team members, Abdulrahman Al Rajhi, 24 and Salman Al Maqadi, 21.

Whilst Prince Faisal and Abdullah have been steadfast team members of Saudi Equestrian since it first formed in 2009 – including being part of the London 2012 bronze medal winning team – it will be the first major competition that Abdulrahman and Salman have taken part in, and the first time that they have represented their country.

Abdulrahman Al Rajhi rides 15-year-old New Orleans, whilst Salman Al Maqadi will be partnered with 13-year-old Senorita. Both horses possess a wealth of experience between them – particularly at top level competition. Grey gelding New Orleans has competed in – and won – numerous top level competitions under his former Dutch rider Gerco Schröder, whilst Senorita was formally ridden by HRH Prince Abdullah Bin Miteb, who won team gold with the mare at the Pan Arab Games in 2011.

HH Prince Faisal Alshalan, who has competed in the Beijing 2008 Olympics, the 2011 Pan-Arab Games and most recently the FEI Alltech World Equestrian Games in Normandy, said: “The conditions are really good here in Incheon and it is a really well organised event.”

“There is a good dynamic in our the Saudi team,” he continued. “We are made up of two experienced riders and two young riders who have qualified for their places in the team following a trial competition. They are both very good riders and we are all looking forward to the competition starting.”

Saudi Equestrian Team Chef d’Equipe, Rogier van Iersal said: “All the horses and riders arrived at the beginning of the week and have settled in well. The venue looks good, it has great facilities which we have been using in training to prepare for the weekend.”

“The competition is strong so it will be tough on Sunday in the Nations Cup but we have good horses and in-form riders so we are hopeful of good results.”

There will be a warm up class for all competitors on Saturday and the first round Jumping starts at 09:00 (local time) on Sunday 28th September. This will be followed by a rest day and then competition concludes on Tuesday 30 September. All the start lists and live results can be viewed here.
