ABDULLAH UNLUCKY IN VIENNA

Abdullah Al Sharbatly travelled to Vienna this weekend to compete in the penultimate leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour 2014. He was unlucky not to follow up last weekend’s success with another win, but instead produced some strong results on 12-year-old gelding, Coriander Van’t Vennehof and 13-year-old mare, Andrea.

Riding Coriander Van’t Vennehof in the opening class on Friday – a horse which he has only been competing since August – he produced two superb clear rounds and ended up in fourth position.  Later on that evening, he rode his favourite mare, Andrea in the 1.50m class and was unfortunate to clip one pole in the jump off, costing them three places and thus ended up in ninth position.

The following day, Coriander Van’t Vennehof produced a fine clear round in the third class, which was a 1.50m one round against the clock. His time was just over three seconds outside the winning time and he ended up finishing in a very respectable sixth place.

Sharbatly entered Andrea, on whom he won last week in Lausanne, in the feature class of the weekend, the Vienna Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix 1.65m. In the first round they were foot perfect right up until the last three fences, but uncharacteristically Andrea brushed the top pole with her back legs on each of the last three jumps and inevitably gravity took over. Thus they were not able to progress any further on this occasion.

Abdullah now looks ahead to the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea which takes place this week. The Show Jumping starts on 28th September and concludes on 30th September.
