SHARBATLY GIVES TYPICALLY BRAVE AND DARING RIDE TO WIN AT THE GCT CSI5* LAUSANNE

Abdullah Al Sharbatly added a win at the Global Champions Tour CSI5* in Lausanne to his string of successes this year, when romping to victory with his mare Andrea in the Prix du Qatar – the final class of the weekend’s tournament – last Sunday.

The show jumping courses at the beautiful venue of Lausanne, designed by Belgium’s Luc Musette, had been big and challenging all weekend and the final class of the event was no different. The first round course was technical, demanding precision and control – and as a consequence clear rounds were few and far between. Sharbatly was just one of 14 to jump clear and progress to the second round against the clock.

The jump off was fast and furious which had the crowd rising from their seats. Simon Delestre (FRA) set a blistering time early on of 40.49 seconds on Ryan des Hayettes and for a long time it looked as though the Frenchman had it in the bag. However, in typical Sharbatly style – brave and daring – the former World Championship Silver Medallist smashed Delestre’s time by 2.13 seconds which no one else could match. Second went to recent World Championship Team Gold medallist Jur Vrieling with VDL Zirocco NOP and 3rd to young rising star Bertram Allen (IRE) with Romanov.

Sharbatly said: “It was an amazing feeling to win at Lausanne. I would like to thank God, King Abdullah and all the management of the Saudi Equestrian Team for helping me to not only win yesterday, but all of my success this year.”

“The course was very technical – in fact it felt more difficult than the Grand Prix the day before – but Andrea was outstanding. I believe I could have gone faster if I had wanted to but I just wanted to set a time that would put everyone else under pressure without having to ask too much of my horse. I think I did that well.”

He continued: “I really love this mare and it always feels very special to win on her – not only because she has become like a friend to me – but also because she is owned by my mother, who has always been huge support to me. It is lovely to give something back by winning on a horse that belongs to her.”

Sharbatly heads to Vienna this weekend for the next leg of the Global Champions Tour, and will follow this by competing at the Asian Games in South Korea later on this month.
